July is here, the heart of summer. A time when many of us slow down from the usual rush to more fully enjoy and appreciate friends and family. This weekend, with Independence Day upon us, and with all that’s going on in the world, I find myself reflecting on how my family came to this country. Just three generations back, my father’s great-grandparents came from Dublin, Ireland, to start a new life in America. They settled in South Carolina, where they established a flour mill and started a family. Eventually, they moved to northern Alabama along with other Irish immigrants, building a community that became known as “Little Ireland.” My relatives live there still, and I’ve been back many times, often visiting my great-great-grandfather’s grave in the yard of a church he helped found. My heart always swells a little, feeling pride and gratitude for his gumption and hard work. It couldn’t have been easy.
Do you have a story about how your family came to this country? The theme of this Runner is "Roots." Perhaps, like me, your family emigrated a few generations back. Or perhaps you are first-generation immigrant, or even a refugee, having faced struggles or hardship. We hope some of you will consider sharing your heritage story, so we can learn more about each other and continue to foster a welcoming community.
We’d love to have any other articles, photos, or poems that may not match the theme but may be of interest to the neighborhood as well.
Also, please send your news announcements, such as births, graduations, marriages, etc., for our Talk of the Acres column.
Deadline for submissions is July 19, 2017. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Runner Schedule (Issue and delivery time)
